Mapping Our Journey Towards Equity

On August 7th, 2025, the K-16 Collaborative hosted its "Mapping Our Journey Towards Equity" Convening to showcase the first drafts of pathway maps, highlighting the Collaborative’s ongoing commitment to equity and student success. The event also created space for collaboration, future planning across six counties, and launching our brand new logo, shown here.

Nearly 100 participants came together, representing the full spectrum of education, nonprofit, and industry partners across the Central Coast. With voices from K–12 schools, community colleges, four-year universities, county offices of education, nonprofits, and employers, the convening reflected the Collaborative’s commitment to cross-sector collaboration.

The end-of-event survey feedback confirmed the convening’s success, with participants rating their experience highly and indicating strong enthusiasm for future participation.

Key Highlights

Highlights of the day included the Student Panel, which centered student voices; the Industry Panel, where workforce leaders shared emerging needs; the unveiling of the Pathway Map Posters, which showcased progress and collaboration; and robust Networking opportunities, allowing partners to deepen connections across the region.

  • The Student Panel brought forward authentic perspectives from learners across the region, highlighting the supports that helped them succeed and the barriers that made progress more difficult. Their reflections reinforced the importance of designing pathways that are both equitable and responsive to student needs.

  • Industry leaders shared emerging workforce trends and emphasized the critical skills needed in fields like engineering, computer science, and healthcare. The discussion underscored the value of engaging industry in pathway design to ensure students are prepared for evolving career opportunities.

  • The unveiling of the first four pathway maps was a major milestone, showcasing the collaborative work achieved across the North and South regions. These visual drafts not only demonstrated progress but also encouraged partners to share feedback and identify refinements.

  • Throughout the day, partners connected across K–12, higher education, nonprofit, and industry sectors. These conversations strengthened relationships and opened doors for future collaboration that will advance shared goals for equity and student success.

Feedback from this year’s Convening highlighted ways to strengthen future gatherings, from expanding networking time to increasing industry representation. These insights provide clear direction for making the Convening even more impactful and responsive to partner and student needs.

  • Participants expressed the need for additional space in the agenda to connect with peers across institutions and industries. Many felt that these conversations could lead to stronger partnerships and actionable next steps for students.

  • Feedback emphasized the importance of including a wider range of industry voices, particularly from sectors not yet fully represented. Participants noted that diverse perspectives would enrich discussions and ensure pathways reflect the needs of multiple fields.

  • Attendees requested more examples of programs that are working well in the region. Spotlighting these success stories could provide inspiration and practical models for other institutions to replicate.

  • Several partners wanted to hear more about the specific growth and achievements of individual colleges, schools, and organizations. Sharing updates would help participants track the Collaborative’s impact and encourage cross-county learning.

Participants expressed interest in diving deeper into practical strategies, student supports, and regional collaboration. These themes will help shape future Convenings to ensure discussions remain relevant, actionable, and impactful.

  • Participants want to learn more about how pathways are being successfully implemented across the region. Sharing concrete examples and lessons learned will help partners strengthen their own efforts and identify common challenges.

  • Industry leaders emphasized the need to align education with emerging workforce demands. Future sessions could highlight evolving skills requirements, industry partnerships, and strategies to prepare students for high-demand careers.

  • Attendees noted the importance of providing wraparound supports that address both academic and non-academic needs. Spotlighting effective programs can help partners design services that improve persistence, equity, and long-term student success.

  • Sustaining collaboration requires innovative approaches to resource-sharing and funding. Participants expressed interest in discussing models for cross-county partnerships, pooled funding, and strategies to expand successful programs.

Looking Ahead

The Mapping Our Journey Towards Equity Convening reinforced the power of collaboration and the importance of centering student and industry voices. As we move forward, one of our next big steps is expanding work-based learning through internships, with 100 opportunities already opening doors for local students to gain real-world experience.
